CAMPAIGN AGAINST COVID-19 SENEGAL

We have reached 92% of the campaign. Many thanks to everyone for collaborating

1/3 of the money has already been sent to nen@s talibé to deal with this first wave of the pandemic.

The rest has been saved for the foreseeable second wave in the autumn, which will coincide with its winter and is expected to be more virulent.

We will inform you about the following shipments.

Here are some pictures of the food they bought.

We collaborate with the project "the future belongs to boys and girls" to provide hygiene products and food necessary to face this confinement and ensure their physical and nutritional well-being.

Senegal is a country on the west coast

Senegal is a country on the west coast of Africa that has a population of more than 13 million inhabitants.
Although it is one of the most stable countries in West Africa, more than 50% of the population lives below the poverty threshold.

This situation of poverty experienced by the majority of the population directly affects their limited access to the health system. Senegal has a public health system but not free. As such, the population has to pay a stipulated price for a medical visit (either in the emergency room or with specialists), for treatments and/or interventions, with which many people choose not to go to hospitals and/or health centers , since they cannot afford to pay these fees.

With the new worldwide scenario of a pandemic caused by Covid-19, Senegal faces a great challenge to be able to control the spread of the disease and attend to those affected.

Currently, and according to official sources, there are only 350 people diagnosed with Covid-19 in the whole country and only 5 have died from this disease. These figures call attention if we take into account the trend in all countries and the ease with which Covid-19 spreads among the population. The reality of the country suggests that there may be many more cases of infections than those reflected in the official figures, as well as the number of deaths, but which cannot be accounted for by the population's tendency not to go to hospitals and/or medical centers when they find themselves in trouble for not being able to pay the fees.

This fact represents a handicap in terms of controlling the pandemic in the country and hinders the work of experts to minimize the number of infections. For this reason, the awareness of the population regarding prevention measures is key, especially considering that Senegal, like most African countries, has a very weak health system that would have serious problems in responding to the affected by Covid-19 if the pandemic follows the same trend and incidence as other countries.

On the other hand, the establishment of the confinement of the population brings with it negative collateral consequences to those sectors of the population that are most vulnerable, as is the case of the known "kids/as talibé".

Talibé children live in Daaras (Koranic schools) where a "Marabú" (Koranic teacher) teaches them the Koran. They are boys and girls who have been sent by their families to the Daaras to learn the Koran and most of them do not go to ordinary school.

Currently, most of these schools have become sites where as many children as possible are recruited to send them to the street to beg for money and thus obtain an economic benefit. These children live huddled in the slums in very poor hygienic conditions and eat mostly what people give them on the street, with which many present with malnutrition and undernourishment. They also don't have access to the health system and they have many skin infections because of the unsanitary conditions in which they live.

Now, with the arrival of Covid-19 in the country and the establishment of confinement, these boys and girls cannot go out to the street to beg for food and this condemns them to an even more precarious situation.
In addition, they do not have access to something as essential as soap that allows them to maintain optimal body hygiene and that is now more than ever necessary to prevent the spread of the virus among the smallest and the rest of the population.

For these reasons, from the association, we activated an economic campaign with the objective of providing the boys and girls who are part of the project "The future belongs to boys and girls"hygiene products and the necessary food to be able to stay at home and ensure your physical and nutritional well-being.

To be able to fulfill this objective, we need your help. You can collaborate with the initiative by making onedonation.
We know that these are not easy times for anyone, but it is precisely in these moments when we must be more united than ever and show our solidarity.
There are no small amounts. It all adds up.

Together we will be able to overcome it!

thank you
